Dr. Deb Cash and Dr. Lillian Barden, namesakes of the scholarship fund

Most of our evening students complete their educations with a combination of funding sources: discounted tuition from the university and financial aid, which comes in the form of grants and loans.  Some students have found scholarships, which we always celebrate as even small amounts can make a difference for students in our programs.  We are working to create another scholarship opportunity to assist students who need assistance to bridge the realities of life with the limitations of financial aid.  It is also important to us to find additional ways to reduce the amount of debt that students can graduate with.

One such opportunity received a boost last Friday at the 25th Anniversary of the Human Services and Intensive Business programs.  We had a lovely evening, welcoming alumni, students, staff, administrators, and faculty.  Many offered tributes to Dr. Don Stannard-Friel and Dr. Deb Cash, who co-founded the program.  We also honored the four faculty members who have been part of the program since its inception:  Dr. Patrick Arbore, Ralph Barsi, Dr. Lillian Barden, and Dyanne Ladine.  Most importantly, everyone there celebrated the students and alumni who have made these programs what they are.  In addition to the celebration, many who attended contributed to a scholarship fund that is designed to assist current students to complete their degrees while managing their student debt.

This scholarship fund was created when Dr. Lillian Barden retired for the first time. Her son Dan raised funds for an endowment that is intended to be paid as small, “pay-it-forward” loans to assist students in need.  This attachment about the Lillian Barden Deb Cash Endowment has the rest of that story.  In order to begin paying those scholarships, the fund needs to increase to $25,000.  We are getting close!  The donations made at the 25th Anniversary event are an important step in that direction, especially since our current Dean, Dr. Craig Brewer, has offered to match any funds received up to $5,000 as a gift from the School of Business and management to honor the many students and alumni who are part of the two programs.

If you’d like to honor the students who are part of these programs by making a donation – or if you know anyone who would – our Development Director (also an alum!) has suggested donations of $25, $250, or even $2500 would be perfect to honor these 25 years.  Of course, all amounts are appreciated.  Please feel free to share!  Our goal is to get sufficient donations by April 15, 2014 so that we can begin offering the scholarships by next September.
